Wellness Program

In 2022, the Wellness Program received the Council of Federation (COF) Award for Innovation in Mental Health and Addictions Care. The award is given to individuals and organizations who are excel in the field of recovery-oriented mental health and addictions care.

Mental Health services include individual, couple and family counselling sessions.  Workshops can be provided on mental health disorders, relationships, financial issues and coping skills.  Access to a registered Psychologist is available, on-site, to any community member or BTDH employee via the employee assistance program.

Community members who want to receive counselling services from Wellness Program may do the following:

Step 1: Call the Wellness Program at 403-737-3883 and speak with a Client Case Coordinator. After a brief screening is complete (may be done over the phone) an appointment will be booked to complete intake. The appointment will be scheduled as soon as possible, based on client/ counsellor availability. Walk-in appointments are accepted.

Step 2: Once intake is complete, counselling may begin with a Mental Health Worker.

Step 3: A Treatment Plan is created in coordination with client, and will be based on client needs and counsellor assessment.

  • Substance Abuse: detox, individual counselling, residential treatment, aftercare.
  • Mental Health: depression, anxiety, grief, loss, anger management, trauma and additional areas as needed.

Step 4: Continue Accessing Counselling Services, by appointment. Access to Cultural Support is available.

This program works to reduce domestic violence utilizing traditional methods, healing circles, community and Elder resources and strives to restore harmony in the family and throughout the community.

The program provides education, awareness and intervention strategies for children/youth experiencing suicidal thoughts, feelings and behaviours. Various activities are implemented to decrease the indicators for suicide and/or suicidal tendencies as Wellness Program believes that our youth represent the future of the Blood Tribe and that their health and well being determines the future health and well being of our community as a whole.

NNADAP provides one to one, and family counselling, and referral services.  This program also assists in all areas of client’s physical, mental and spiritual health.  Group activities to promote community engagement include social gatherings such as sober walks, sobriety camps and round dances.  Additional resources include a youth addictions worker and our knowledgeable Elders.

This program provides education, awareness and support to those who are suffering with illicit substance and alcohol use disorders. Clients will learn adequate skills to cope with drug related urges and thoughts. Also, this program can help guide clients looking for alternative options for addiction treatment. This program is open to family members and caregivers of those suffering from substance use disorders.

Community members who want to participate in the Day Treatment Program may do the following:

Step 1: Call the Wellness Program at 403-737-3883 on Monday and speak with the Receptionist to include your name (with phone number) on participant list for Day Treatment Program (which takes place on Thursday each week).

Step 2: Once on the participant list, you will receive a phone call on Wednesday (from Wellness Program) to confirm attendance for the current week and if transportation is required.

Step 3: If transportation is required, pick up by Wellness Program is on Thursday morning (between 7:30 – 8:30 AM).

Step 4: Attend Day Treatment Program on Thursday beginning at 8:45 AM to 4:00 PM. Snacks and lunch provided. You are encouraged to attend the Day Treatment Program as many times as you wish; there is no limit on how often you attend. Everyone is Welcome!

Important note: Registration for Day Treatment Program is weekly. You must call in each week if you wish to attend.

The Crisis Intervention Unit works closely with the Blood Tribe Police, Social Services and Emergency Services and will respond to incidents of overdoses, family violence, suicide and cases of sudden death.  Referral to services are also provided.

The IRS, Day School, and Day Scholar program engages members, service providers and institutional stakeholders living and working within the community and provides leadership and mobilizes people around issues affecting our communities.

Wellness Program provides mental health supports to families and those affected by MMIWG, individual/family, as well as at all MMIWG events.  The MMIWG committee meets regularly to plan community awareness activities and consists of Wellness Program employees and family members of MMIWG.  On going efforts to ensure education of the historical context of MMIWG is at the forefront to empower and promote individual, family and collective healing as we journey towards truth and reconciliation – together.

The Interagency/Brighter Futures Initiative works to liaise with all agencies, departments and entities to establish a rapport with existing resources to improve the delivery of services and programs for all agencies.  This program strives to create joint ventures for new initiatives.
