Eligibility and Access Guidelines

We provide essential, short-term shelter with a focus on harm reduction and stability. Functioning as a culturally safe haven, the LWSSU offers immediate accommodation to address the crisis of homelessness. We address basic needs first, providing guests with the physical and mental reprieve necessary to move out of “survival mode” and focus on their health, recovery, and the transition toward permanent housing.

The strength of the LWSSU lies in our multidisciplinary team of Intake Workers, Wellness Monitors, Outreach Workers, Security, Team-Leads, Case Managers, Addiction Workers, Health Care Aids, Nurses, Facility Staff, and finally a highly driven Management Team. We utilize a person-centered approach to system navigation, recognizing that the barriers our guests face are complex. Rather than simple referrals, we provide wrap-around support to actively bridge gaps in service. We work diligently to facilitate successful warm transfers in critical areas:

• Legal & Justice: Navigating court supports and connecting with legal counsel.

• Financial & Income: Assisting with applications for AISH, Alberta Works, and building financial literacy.

• Housing & Shelter: Executing tailored searches for sustainable accommodation and completing housing referrals.

• Health & Recovery: Proactively researching treatment pathways, waitlists, and entry requirements to support the continuum of care.

• Complex Needs: Specialized advocacy and coordination for PDD (Persons with Developmental Disabilities) and cognitive support agencies.

Client/Participant/Guests rights are those basic rules of conduct between patients and medical caregivers. A Client/Participant/Guest is anyone who has requested to be evaluated by or who is being evaluated by any healthcare professional.

People don’t always know that they have rights within the Canadian healthcare system. Client/Patients/Residents in Alberta and Canada have the right to the following:

1. To receive appropriate and timely care.
2. To be treated with dignity and respect.
3. To receive health services without discrimination.
4. To have their personal and health information protected from disclosure.
5. To have access to their health information unless, in the opinion of a relevant health professional, the disclosure could result in immediate and grave harm to the patient’s health or safety
6. To refuse consent to any proposed treatment
7. To receive information relating to any proposed treatment and options
8. To the recognition of your Representative or Substitute Decision-maker
9. To the recognition of your Advance Directive
10. To a second opinion
11. To pain and symptom management

We are dedicated to continuous growth and value the voice of our community and guests. If you have feedback or concerns, we encourage you to inform our management team so we can continue to improve the LWSSU experience. Please access our Grievance and Feedback Form here.
