The mission of the Kainai Home Care program is to achieve and maintain well-being and personal independence in a self-sustaining community:

Home Care is provided by Registered Nurses (RN), Licensed Practical Nurses (LPN), Registered Medical Social Worker (MSW), Occupational Therapist (OT), and Health Care aides (HCA).  The HCAs are supported and supervised by a Registered Nurse.

Programs provided:

Nursing

Nurses will come into the home and provide nursing care by conducting an assessment.  Duties covered by a Home Care Nurse (HCN) could include wound care, special injections, palliative care and case management.  Case management would include referrals to appropriate services such as OT, PT, social Work, Whirlpool Bath, etc.

Foot Care

Both basic and advanced foot care is provided by certified RNs and LPNs every Wednesday and Thursday on an appointment basis.  A thorough foot assessment will be complete, care given to the foot/feet and recommendations may be made.

Whirlpool Bath

This program is managed by a HCA supervisor.  On an appointment basis, members may be scheduled for whirlpool baths.  A prescription is required for this service.

Respite

Health Care Aides (HCA) will come into the home and provide respite services up to the maximum of 10 hours a week.  They will also offer and provide the home exercise support program.

Social Work

A Medical social Worker (MSW) will assist home care clientele with personal directives, guardianship, trusteeship, etc.  The MSW will advocate on funding/financial requests and advocate to various agencies as required.

Occupational Therapy

Occupational Therapist (OT) assist members with receiving equipment for personal use i.e. wheelchairs, walkers, etc. or for the home i.e. poles, raised toiled seat etc.  OT will teach home exercises to clientele.

Who Benefits from Home and Community Services?

Persons of any age living on the Blood Reserve who have been assessed may have services that result from:

  • Being discharged from hospital,
  • Having an illness or disease needing follow up care,
  • Being unable to live alone while waiting for care to a long term care facility,
  • Having a disability requiring assistance to live independently,
  • Need nursing care at home,
  • Choosing to live at home instead of a long term care facility as long as it is safe, affordable and services are available,
  • Home care is a privilege, not a right.

Referral Process:

Kainai Home Care has an open referral system.  We will assess all referrals, which may be made by the individual themselves, family members, friends, doctors, or other agencies.
