Peer Support Worker

SUMMARY OF WORK:
The Bringing the Spirit Home Program provides hope for those who are affected by substance dependency. Under the close supervision of a team of physicians, paramedics, counsellors, nurses, peer support workers and elders, the client’s path to recovery is carefully monitored based on their individual needs. Individuals will receive respectful and culturally-supported services in a safe and supportive environment.
The peer support worker is responsible to assist in the recovery of clients within the center, and provide Outreach to community, by sharing their knowledge and common experiences, providing mentorship, building community, connecting to resources, organizing group sharing sessions; acts as a resource for both clients and healthcare providers by providing emotional support and client advocacy, and promoting healthy service provider relationships, and assist with light housekeeping duties. The ideal candidate must be able to complete all physical requirements of the position (Walking for long periods, lifting, etc.)
PROFESSIONAL & PERSONAL QUALITIES:
- Class 5 Drivers License required, (Class 4 an asset).
- Education in Health Care Aide, First Medical Responder/Emergency Medical Responder or in Addictions and Mental Health, or other related Health Sciences (Asset)
- Lived Experience with 2 years recovery (Asset)
- First Aid/CPR
- Experience working in Human Services.
- Security background or certification (Asset)
- Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (Asset)
- Suicide Prevention & Assessment (Asset)
- Ability to work collaboratively as a member of a multidisciplinary team
- Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information
- An understanding of, and sensitivity to, working with individuals who struggle with substance dependency, mental health, and homelessness
- Personal experience in recovery from substance use challenge(s), and ability to draw upon wellness and recovery in providing intentional peer support
- Knowledge of Blackfoot language and culture and geological landscape of the Blood Tribe
- Knowledge of the current community addictions crisis.
