Accreditation

The goal of Accreditation has always been to ensure we meet and exceed acceptable national standard levels of quality care and patient safety and we’ve been successful in meeting these standards since the early 2000’s when Charles Weasel Head, BTDH Board of Director Vice-Chair & Former Chief Executive Officer made the decision to rise to the challenge.

Following Accreditation Canada’s Qmentum program involves a rigorous evaluation process and is one of the most effective ways to consistently examine and improve the quality of our services. Receiving accredited recognition marks a milestone in our organization’s continued journey of excellence. The most recent On-Site Survey Visit held in April 2023 earmarked the 6th Accreditation Cycle and it is with great pride, honour and respect to report that our organization has exceeded the requirements of the Qmentum accreditation program with 13 site locations now Accredited with Commendation. This particular milestone is significant based on the following achievements:

  • First time our organization has received Accreditation with Commendation recognition in comparison to previous Accreditation cycles.
  • First time a recipient was awarded the Aboriginal Substance Misuse standard for an On-Reserve Community – with a 100% standard result
  • First time a series of programs/sites matched a 100% standard result with Governance

Meeting accreditation standards involves an ongoing process of assessing health and social services against national standards of excellence to identify what is being done well and where improvement areas are required. Below is a list of the accreditation standards that we as an organization were evaluated on:

  1. Aboriginal Community Health and Wellness
  2. Aboriginal Substance Misuse Services
  3. Community-Based Mental Health Services and Supports
  4. EMS and Interfacility Transports
  5. Governance for Aboriginal Health Services
  6. Home Care Services
  7. Infection Prevention and Control for Community-Based Organizations
  8. Leadership for Aboriginal Health Services
  9. Long Term Care Services
  10. Medication Management for Community-Based Organization

All of the standards make a difference to health care quality and safety. A set of standards includes criteria and guidelines that show what is necessary to provide high quality care and service.

Some criteria – specifically those related to safety, ethics, risk management, or quality improvement – are considered high priority and carry more weight in determining the accreditation decision.

This chart shows the percentage of high priority criteria and the percentage of all criteria that the organization met in each set of standards.

More importantly, our organization continues to demonstrate a strong commitment to maintaining quality and safety of the programs and services for Blood Tribe members to be living a holistic lifestyle.

“By now, almost everyone in the organization understands that accreditation is important work, even during a pandemic. From this experience, we’ve learned that we’ve been successful in addressing issues as they come up, for that ultimate level of quality and safety in these challenging times,’ says Chief Executive Office Derrick Fox. “We’ve come a long way, from our humble beginnings and now, always expanding and moving forward. We have our own Clinics, Dentist, Pharmacy, Optometrist, Wellness Centre, Detox Centre, Continuing Care Centre, Emergency Services and future initiatives like the 75-bed Recovery Community, potential hospital and intergovernmental health table where more opportunities for self-determination and health care services continue to present themselves.”

“Additionally, it’s nice to have our Kainaiyssini cultural lens, because it’s not just about meeting clinical and administrative requirements, it’s thinking about how to improve our care from a patient and family perspective here at home. We all learned from the Covid-19 pandemic that we were able to adapt quickly, even in a crisis situation as high-quality care and safety are part of our daily work. We are accredited and from this experience and standards, we’ve learned that if issues come up, we’ve been successful in addressing them for that ultimate level of quality and safety. I am very proud to be a part of excellence in service for our people,” Charles Weaselhead, BTDH Board of Directors Vice-Chair.”
